Francisco Portela

Francisco Portela is a Consultant in Gastroenterology at the gastroenterology department of Coimbra University Hospital Centre in Coimbra, Portugal. He graduated with an MD from Coimbra Medical School in 1986 then specialized in gastroenterology, focusing on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and endosonography.

Dr Portela has been involved in many multicentre trials in IBD including some of the pivotal trials of biologics in ulcerative colitis and Crohn´s disease. 

Dr Portela is a member of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (ECCO), for which he was the national representative for Portugal from 2008 to 2012. He has been a member of the Portuguese Crohn’s and Colitis Patients Association since 2001 and was President of the Portuguese IBD Study Group (GEDII) from 2009 to 2012. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis, Digestion, and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and has been a reviewer for the official journal of the Portuguese Gastroenterological Association since 2001.
